Step 1: Prepare Concrete For The Epoxy Flake Flooring System
Like most decorative concrete projects, this is the most critical step. All substrates must be properly treated. They must be clean and free from any pollutants that may inhibit resin adhesion. The concrete must be cured for at least 30 days and free from any internal moisture. The slab should be formed into a minimum CSP-2 by grinding or shot peening. This means' quite rough '. You want a surface similar to sandpaper with a particle size of 60 or 80. This gives the resin something to grab. Thoroughly vacuum after preparation.
Step 2: Apply a Epoxy Primer / Base Coat.
This can be transparent or colored, depending on your application. If the prepared floor is very porous or shows many surface defects, it should be considered to apply pure primer before the first spraying. This will ensure maximum adhesion to the prepared substrate. Primer also helps to seal the air in the concrete to prevent bleeding from the finished surface. Mix the A and B parts of the resin material separately to ensure separation occurs. Ensure that the material has also reached room temperature. For applications, mix the materials by weight for 3 minutes using a low-speed mixer. Mix only a certain amount of material that can be spread within 30 minutes. After mixing, immediately begin pouring the material onto the floor in long usable ribbons.
Step 3: Broadcast The Flakes
After rolling the material back, you will start playing the flakes. The best way to achieve this is to put a few pounds of potato chips into a clean bucket, take out a small handful of potato chips, and throw them in the air onto the sticky floor. It is important to throw them up to achieve good propagation and faster coverage.
If you choose to do 'partial broadcast', your goal is to spread evenly on the floor within what you think is a good coverage range. Don't throw them on the floor, as you will end up with many heavy spots.
For 'full broadcast', you can follow the same program, but you need to use a larger chip. You can do this quickly and 'make a mess of things'. Please remember that it is normal to have a large amount of loose debris on the floor. As you walk around, you are looking for any "shiny" area to cover the floor. This is visible resin and should be covered. You can only walk on the floor wearing pointed sandals.
Step 4: Scrape the Floor
Partial broadcast: Once you remove any irregular protruding debris, the floor can be coated with protective topcoat. This is easily accomplished with a floor scraper or a large dry wall knife twisted at the end of the column. Simply slide the blade across the entire floor to strike. Put down those suspicious chips stuck in the air. After completion, you can shovel up the loose debris and thoroughly clean the remaining debris on the floor with a vacuum cleaner.
Full broadcast: First, all loose debris that has not adhered to the floor will be removed. You can use an electric blower or broom to push them to the side of the room, and then use a spoon or vacuum cleaner to pick them up. There will be many. Once cleaned, you can grab a floor scraper or a large dry wall knife twisted at the end of the column and slide it across the entire floor to knock out any debris that protrudes into the air. Then use a vacuum cleaner again to clean the debris on the floor. This process does not require pointed sandals.
Step 5: Apply A Protective Topcoat
The next step is to apply a protective topcoat of polyaspartic. A single topcoat will allow for more chip textures to appear. You can reduce this situation by applying a second layer of topcoat. Mix an appropriate amount of materials together and spread them on the floor with ribbons. Use a flat scraper to drag the material back and forth to unfold it. Use a 3/8 roughening roller to roll the material back until uniform and without any marks. If necessary, you can apply another layer of topcoat. You can only walk on the floor wearing pointed sandals.
The floor can be walked within 4 hours. Avoid using any bulky furniture for 3-7 days.
